Wedding bells for Barnaby Joyce

In a whirlwind of controversy and headlines, the love story between former Australian Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce and his political advisor Vikki Campion is about to take centre stage in the tranquil backdrop of rural Walcha.

According to The Daily Mail, the couple, whose relationship sparked a political firestorm, is all set to tie the knot in a "bush bash" themed wedding on November 12, right in the heart of New England's countryside.

With a select group of friends and loyal National Party supporters on the guest list, the nuptials are scheduled to kick off at 11am, at a location that is being kept tightly under wraps but is rumoured to be one of the Joyce family properties at nearby Woolbrook.

The couple has left no stone unturned in embracing the rustic charm of the Australian bush, and their guests have been given a taste of what's in store. Attendees are encouraged to arrive in their trusty utes or robust 4WD vehicles, roll out their swags, and get ready to party until the stars light up the outback sky.

A guest who is eagerly anticipating what has been dubbed the "political wedding of the year" described the event as reminiscent of a B&S (bachelor and spinster) ball, saying, "It's very much Barnaby getting back to his country roots...we can't wait. The naysayers said they wouldn't get to this point, but this is two people in love, and we can't wait to celebrate."

Further details about the exact wedding location will be shared with guests closer to the date, but they have been assured of an abundance of refreshments and entertainment well into the night.

Many of the attendees are expected to embrace the full country experience, spending the night in their swags under the vast, starlit sky or in the back of their trusty utes. For those who prefer a more comfortable resting place, a bus will be on hand to shuttle them back to the nearby town, where they can find lodgings at the local country hotel.

Adding to the sentimental charm of this country wedding are Joyce and Campion's two sons, Sebastian and Tom, who are expected to play a special role in the ceremony. The fact that the ceremony and reception are at the same location underscores the couple's desire to keep the event intimate and close-knit.

It is understood that one of Barnaby Joyce's four daughters from his previous marriage to Natalie will also be in attendance, marking a significant step toward mending relationships that have been strained since the affair came to light.

Barnaby Joyce's proposal to Vikki Campion over dinner in Coffs Harbour in January 2022 marked the beginning of a new chapter in their relationship, nearly four years after their affair was thrust into the public eye.

The journey to this wedding day was not without its challenges. At the height of the affair's revelation, the then Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, criticised Joyce for a "shocking error of judgment" due to the affair and the pain it caused the women in his life. Consequently, Joyce stepped down from his role as Deputy Prime Minister and Nationals leader in the face of mounting pressure to resign.

Natalie Joyce, Barnaby's former wife, was thrust into the spotlight when she claimed she had no knowledge of her husband's infidelity. Today, Barnaby Joyce serves as the Member for New England and holds the position of Shadow Minister for Veteran Affairs, representing the same region where his love story with Vikki Campion is set to culminate in a unique and charming "bush bash" wedding.

As the couple exchanges their vows and dances under the stars of rural Australia, they bid farewell to the past, embracing a brighter and more united future, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the New England countryside.

Image: Office of the Deputy Prime Minister

"Crossed a line": Bell Shakespeare's blistering response to negative review

Australian theatre company, Bell Shakespeare, has publicly issued a blistering response to a theatre critic’s “cruel and unfair” review.

The Age critic Cameron Woodhead gave the theatre company’s current production of Macbeth a two star rating - and he singled out the lead actor, Hazem Shammas’ performance of Macbeth.

In his review, Woodhead claimed that Shammas “belongs in the Richard III ward of Monty Python’s Hospital for Over-Acting”.

He said that the Logie-winning actor’s portrayal of Macbeth was “so cartoonish” and “unhinged” and that he was “stalked by the inappropriate silhouette of the clown”.

The 500-word review mostly nitpicked at Shammas’ performance, commenting on how he should reign in his “vein-popping excess” and “trust in the words” of Shakespeare, as if he knew what Shakespeare would’ve wanted.

The review was published online on April 27 and a week later Bell Shakespeare launched their blistering response on social media.

The statement began with the theatre company explaining that they are open to criticism and understand that sometimes there will be “creative differences”.

“The Age’s theatre critic, Cameron Woodhead, didn’t like our current production of Macbeth (May 1 edition). That’s his prerogative; many critics have provided favourable reviews of this production and Macbeth means many things to many people. One of the joys of seeing Shakespeare’s works is to debate them afterwards.

“This time though, we must call out conduct which, in our view, was cruel and unfair,” they wrote in their statement posted on Facebook.

“Cameron’s targeting of the lead actor Hazem Shammas was, in our view, belittling and contemptuous,” they added, citing Woodhead’s harsh comments.

“Whilst Cameron may have issues with the production, we do not consider a response should ever be draped in language like this. In our view, no actor deserves to be dismissed so personally in a theatre review”.

They added that Shammas’ personal life and Palestinian background allowed him to resonate with the fact that “Macbeth is driven by something that finally breaks him,” as that story was his “dad’s story in terms of coming to this land and then pursuing his dreams at all costs, in terms of the costs to himself and breaking the hearts of the ones he left behind.”

“Actors don’t have a voice when critics write negative things about them. It has long been thus. However, the stage is their workplace. And they are entitled to a safe space at work just as much as anyone,” they wrote, defending Shammas.

They ended the statement saying that Woodhead had “crossed a line”.

Many fans have applauded the company for standing up for their star, while others justified Woodhead’s criticism.

“Cameron Woodhead gave one of my novels a bruisingly rude review a few years ago. I think he enjoys unleashing the poison pen occasionally. I have finally managed to laugh about it, but it took me years,” commented one person.

“What a great response and wonderful example of integrity from Bell Shakespeare!” commented another person

“Good on you for calling this out. We can be critical without being cruel, and given the tough times we’re in, we can all employ a little more respect and kindness,” wrote a third.

Image: Bell Shakespeare

"We said just do it": Mum recalls moment her newborn son fought for his life

After a seemingly straightforward birth, Brooke Ryan didn’t expect the almighty commotion that saw her son fighting for his life.

Brooke gave birth to her third son, Kaiden, in 2016 and said there were initially “no problems or issues”.

“They did notice some of his vitals were changing, his blood sugar was fluctuating, and his APGAR (newborn screening test) score was worse than it was at first so they said they needed to take him away to monitor him,” the 36-year-old told 9Honey.

It wasn’t until later that she and her husband Julian heard and saw the hospital sirens and lights go off, only to find out Kaiden had stopped breathing and that medical staff were attempting to resuscitate him.

Kaiden was then treated for meningitis, a worse-case scenario, while staff investigated what caused the sudden change.

The next day, he was transported to Randwick Children’s Hospital, and Brooke had to discharge herself from the hospital she’d given birth in to be with him, her husband, and her sister Ashley.

“When we got there the surgeon told us Kaiden had suffered a massive bleed on the back of his brain and that they would need to operate to remove the blood or he wouldn’t survive,” Brooke said.

“They also said in all likelihood he wouldn’t survive the operation because he was only hours old and he only had so much blood in him.

“We said just do it.”

With no apparent alternatives, Kaiden went into surgery, but his parents were only able to see him after it finished.

“He was so swollen and he had all these tubes and machines and everything just all around him,” Brooke recalled.

Kaiden survived the surgery and “got stronger and stronger every day”, but there was no mention of brain damage at any of his monthly checkups.

“They told us a blood vessel in his brain had burst and ruptured but they didn’t know why,” Brooke said.

“When we got to about eight weeks we were telling them he was wobbly and had a floppy neck. It wasn’t getting stronger. They kept telling us he’d had major brain surgery and they’d had to cut through the muscle in the back of the neck and it would take a long time for him to recover.”

Eventually doctors picked that something was amiss and began to suspect Kaiden had Cerebral Palsy (CP).

“When I thought of CP I thought of people in wheelchairs who can’t do anything for themselves,” Brooke said.

The family soon connected with the Cerebral Palsy Alliance (CPA) when Kaiden was seven months old and he was able to start physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

Kaiden wasn’t formally diagnosed with the condition until he was 18 months old.

Now five-years-old, Kaiden only needs assistance physically, and he receives plenty from his parents, two older sisters, and the CPA.

“(His sisters) are very protective of Kaiden, very, very, very motherly,” Brooke said.

“But they are so compassionate, patient and understanding. They would give him anything. I keep saying we are so lucky to have him.”

Images: 9Honey

"That's disgusting": Karl slams Queensland quarantine rules

Karl Stefanovic has slammed the Queensland government's Covid-19 quarantine rules after a six-year-old with cerebral palsy is stuck in Sydney.

Lenny Silveira and his father Fabio are staying in a Sydney hotel after not being able to return to their home on the Sunshine Coast.

The father and son travelled to the US for life-saving brain surgery for Lenny that is not currently available in Australia.

After flying the US back to Sydney, the six-year-old was denied an exemption by Queensland Health to be reunited with his mum and three siblings by quarantining at home, which goes against doctor's orders for Lenny's recovery.

Lenny and Fabio were denied the exemption because their flight landed in Sydney, as there are currently no direct flights from the US to Brisbane.

After Fabio shared his son's story on Today, Karl expressed his fury at the situation, describing the Queensland governments response to the sick child as "awful".

"I understand the seriousness of this situation but we are talking about a six-year-old boy."

Queensland Health has denied a Sunshine Coast boy with cerebral palsy an exemption to quarantine at home after undergoing major brain surgery in the U.S. #9Today pic.twitter.com/zQ7zHLR7EK
— The Today Show (@TheTodayShow) October 12, 2021

"Just have a look at that child there with cerebral palsy, in a hotel quarantine," Stefanovic fumed.

"That is disgusting. Alert viewers spot Cabinet Minister's serious health condition on live TV

NSW Cabinet Minister Victor Dominello made an urgent discovery about his own health after a number of concerned viewers alerted him to a major issue.

The viewers noticed his "droopy eye" during the NSW State COVID-19 press conference on Wednesday so the Customer Service Minister sought medical advice and was diagnosed with Bell's palsy on Wednesday afternoon.

The minister later posted on his Facebook account, saying he’d received this diagnosis at the Royal North Shore Hospital. Bell's palsy is a condition which causes a sudden weakness or paralysis in one side of the face.

“At this morning’s press conference, a number of people commented on my droopy eye,” he wrote in his post.

“Some people thought I was winking at the cameraman. Some thought I had a stroke.

“I have actually been diagnosed with Bell’s palsy.”

Minister Dominello continued in his post: “About 48 hours ago - I felt a pain in my skull behind my right ear. This morning I woke up with pins and needles on the right side of my tongue. But I did not notice any droopiness around my eye.

I only took it more seriously this afternoon - after a number of people sent me a screenshot of the press conference and others contacted my office prompting me to seek urgent medical advice.

Thanks to everyone who reached out .

The reason I am posting is because hopefully it will remind people to look after their health.

We are focussed on Covid but there are plenty of other health problems going on.

If you have any health concerns - please get them looked after.

Ps - thanks to staff at Royal North Shore - we are blessed to live in a country with this health system ”

Bell’s Palsy is caused by inflammation or damage to the facial nerve which are thought to be linked to viral infections. It can be treated with oral steroids or antiviral medicine with complete recovery usually taking several months.

Other symptoms include difficulty making facial expressions, drooping of one side of the mouth, difficulty eating, drooling, pain or sensitivity on the affected side of the body. Patients can also experience headaches and loss of taste.

Anyone who develops these symptoms should seek medical treatment immediately.

Photo: Facebook

Boy climbs UK's tallest mountain after being told he’d never walking again

Mum demands answers after police taser teenage daughter with cerebral palsy

A Queensland mother is demanding answers from police after the police tasered her teenage daughter who has cerebral palsy at her Townsville school.

Police say that the girl began damaging property and lunged at an officer after they went to her school to speak to her about a separate matter on Thursday.

“She’s got cerebral palsy, she has seizures, and she’s only got the use of one hand and she’s not very good on her legs, so why taser her,” the unnamed mother has told the ABC.

The mother says she learned what happened when a child safety officer called and let her know that her daughter was in hospital.

“She said that they tasered her twice, they had her handcuffed to the bed,” the mother said.

“They said that she had a cricket bat and she was smashing things with it.”

The woman has said she will lodge a complaint with police.

Police have since issued a statement confirming the incident.

“A 16-year-old girl has sustained minor injuries after being subject to a taser deployment at an educational facility in Mundingburra,” police said.

“The girl was speaking with officers in relation to a separate matter when she allegedly became aggressive and started damaging property. As police and staff attempted to calm the girl she lunged at an officer who subsequently deployed their taser.”

The girl was taken to hospital but not seriously injured. Her mother says that the girl suffered bruises to her stomach.

Pay the piper: Authorities finally move on cancer fraud Belle Gibson

Authorities have moved in on cancer fraud Belle Gibson after a warrant was issued to raid her home to seize her assets, according to The Daily Mail.

Gibson has previously claimed that she wasn’t “in a position” to pay back her $410,000 fine six months ago, but the warrant executed a “seize and sell” warrant on her home, which means that her assets have been seized to pay back what she owes.

She has been living free and seemingly happy since her fine for duping Australians was handed back in September 2017.

The amount Gibson owes has since ballooned to more than $500,000 as this figure includes fines, interests and other penalties.

Consumer Affairs Victoria quietly filed for the warrant at the Federal Court in late December, which was issued this week and officers descended on her home for retrieval for the assets.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for Consumer Affairs Victoria said:

“Sheriff's Officers visited an address in Northcote today to execute a warrant of seizure and sale on items belonging to Ms Gibson.

“Consumer Affairs Victoria is committed to recovering the debt Ms Gibson owes the Victorian public and will continue to pursue Ms Gibson until it is repaid in full.”

It is unknown what was seized from Gibson’s property, but her mysterious finances continue to be of interest to the court system.

In court, Gibson explained that she could not afford the fine.

“I'm not in a position to pay a $410,000 fine at this time”, she said.

However, Carl Moller, who was the barrister for Consumer Affairs Victoria, told Gibson that she had spent $91,000 over a two-year period. This was spent on clothing, cosmetics, accessories and a shocking $45,000 was listed as “discretionary spending”.

Moller asked if Gibson had money to pay off the fine.

“Can you find some money to pay off the fine?” he asked.

“No,” Gibson replied.

Moller also was curious as to who deposited $1,600 as this funded a trip overseas to Bali.

“Is it seriously your evidence that $1600 was deposited into your account, in three deposits in the space of about a week, and you don't know who deposited it?” Moller asked.

“I'd have to speculate and I'm not willing to do that,” Gibson replied.

Earlier this year, A Current Affair revealed that Gibson had gone on a trip to South Africa, which was met with fury from the public.

“Don’t you think it’s more important to be paying back that fine rather than going on an overseas trip?” a reporter asked Gibson upon her return to Australia. Gibson said nothing.

Photo credits: Gotcha Belle!: A Current Affair 2019

Cancer fraud Belle Gibson spotted on school run despite not paying back $410k in fines

Cancer fraud Belle Gibson has stepped out months after “locking herself away” after being ordered to explain why she hasn’t paid off her $410,000 in fines.

Gibson was fined $410,000 for defrauding hard-working Aussies by pretending she cured cancer through healthy living. She was found guilty of five breaches of consumer laws.

However, despite the warning and the substantial amount of fines to pay off, Gibson remains a free person in the community and dropped off her child at school.

Gibson quickly became annoyed when she realised a photographer was taking her photo and indignantly raised her mobile phone to take pictures of the photographer.

She quickly made headlines after falsely claiming she had brain cancer and healed herself with natural remedies, giving those who legitimately suffered from cancer new hope for finding a cure for their disease.

She lied to well meaning consumers who supported her Whole Pantry app as well as book sales as she said she would donate money to various charities as well as a boy with inoperable brain cancer, but never ended up donating the money.

Gibson received $440,500 from sales from her book and her app, but only donated around $10,000 to charity.

What angers people more is that despite claiming that she has no money to pay off the funds, she has been seen going on holidays to Bali and Africa and has spent $90,000 over two years.

Cameron Miller, who runs the Shaun Miller foundation said that the damage Gibson has done is “wrong”.

“I just think it's disgusting that she's taken advantage of these people,” he said to The Daily Mail.

“She's out there parading like she's Lady Muck. I just think it's wrong.”

Miller also said that she was giving a bad name to reputable charities.

“When you have people like this it makes it hard for other foundations to convince people to donate money when you've got shonks out there,” he said.

“I just can't get over it ... she's laughing at all these people. She should have been prosecuted (by police). She's a fraudster. She is a con-woman and she should have been prosecuted to the whole letter of the law but she just thinks it's funny.”

While Gibson was grilled in the Federal Court earlier this year over why she hasn’t paid the fines, she claimed she was “not in a position to pay a $410,000 fine at this time”.

Alarm bells: ALDI investigating "deadly" mistake

ALDI is investigating a snack product sold at stores across Australia after complaints emerged that the item was incorrectly labelled.

A Victorian mother lodged a formal complaint with the supermarket chain after she bought a packet of “Natural Almonds” from ALDI’s homebrand Oh So Natural at a Melbourne store, only to find later that it was filled with peanuts.

In a post shared on a Facebook allergy group, the woman wrote the “package states almond though it’s packed with peanuts”.

Fellow shoppers expressed their outrage at the mispackaged peanut product, saying that the mistake could have grave consequences for unsuspecting customers with a peanut allergy.

“That’s a recall right there,” one wrote.

Another commented, “Deadly.”

An ALDI Australia spokesperson told news.com.au that the Food Authority had been alerted after the customer “claiming to have purchased a mislabelled product” reached out to the retailer.

“As the product is labelled ‘almonds’ and it is claimed to contain peanuts, we are moving at pace to validate this claim,” the spokesperson said.

“Since receiving this customer contact, our immediate action has been the review of all products in our stores and the stock in our warehouses.”

The supermarket said they have not discovered another case.

The item in question has not yet been recalled. The spokesperson said a recall will be “immediately” announced if any further evidence to substantiate the woman’s claim is found.

Former editor opens up about Belle Gibson: “We’re all still being duped”

A former magazine editor has come forward about her experience with the renowned Belle Gibson.

The Australian blogger catapulted to fame for her “clean eating” methods that she claimed healed her multiple cancers.

In June 2009, the wellness “health guru” announced she had been diagnosed with malignant brain cancer, admitting she had between six weeks to four months to live.

Months later, Gibson claimed she had completely healed herself of her cancer and in August 2013 launched an app to help others heal from their health problems – reportedly garnering over 200,000 downloads within the first month.

An investigation later revealed Belle had made false claims about donating portions of her income to charity and had completely fabricated her cancer and health conditions – as well as her age and family background.

View this post on Instagram

Ahhh Belle Gibson is back in the news. The day my son became a lifelong Bruce Springsteen fan

Tony Wilson is the author of more than a dozen books for both adults and children. His bestselling book The Cow Tripped Over the Moon is dedicated to his son Jack.

Our son Jack, aged five, is one of Australia’s biggest Bruce Springsteen fans. He has cerebral palsy, which affects all four limbs, and cortical vision impairment, which means he struggles to see further than a metre.

He has inherited his Bruceness from me. I received a copy of Born to Run from my uncle when I was 11 – a dubbed tape containing my first taste of true rock ‘n’ roll, and it was love. My wife, Tamsin, is a respecter of Bruce, if not a devotee. She’s been to two live shows now. She thinks they are great, if a fraction long.

But Jack’s obsession takes mine to a different level. He watches ‘Bwuce’ all day on YouTube. Jack is no ‘greatest hits’ fan. He requests specific gigs, tracks, guest artists (Bwian from The Gaslight Anthem with Bwuce!). He knows all of the E Street Band by name.

We were so unsure whether to take him to see Springsteen when he played in Melbourne in February 2017. On the one hand, he is seriously obsessed. On the other hand, his lack of vision and his sensory processing issues mean he can’t cope with loud music. He’s made screaming exits from the school fete and dozens of other similar scenarios. He hates it if it’s raining too loud on the roof. So, we thought he’d have no chance of coping; my prediction was two minutes, max.

All day he said he didn’t want to go. “Maybe I’ll see Bwuce later,” he said over and over. Then he’d cry, begging not to go. “I want to see Bwuce another time! Not today!” We tried to reassure him, “Just give it a try,” but he was insistent. I started to consider who else might go in his place.

Tamsin was the one who convinced me to give Jack a shot. “Let’s just get him close to the stadium, and if he doesn’t get upset, we’ll just keep going. It’s his favourite thing in the world. We’ve got to try.”

The concert

We set up plans for our inevitable failure. My brother Ned offered to wait outside AAMI Park in Melbourne. The plan was that if Jack was upset, I’d run him out, and Ned would take him home.

Jack flinched at the first blast of noise as we exited the train. I felt a flutter of concern. But Jack regrouped.

“Is that Bwuce?”

“No, that’s Jet,” I said.

“Is there clapping at Jet?”

“Yes, there will be clapping at Jet.”

“Will Bwuce be on soon?”

“Yes, after Jet.”

“And Steven Van Zandt?”

“Yes, he’ll be on guitar.”

“And Patti?”

“Yes, she’ll be there, too.”

“Bwuce’s wife, Patti?”

“Yes, she’s Bruce’s wife.”

“And Nils?”

And so, we name-checked the whole E Street Band as we crossed the railway yards, on the one-kilometre walk from Jolimont Station to AAMI Park.

It got louder and louder, but he seemed to be coping. Then a nervous moment. Security told me I couldn’t take in a backpack. It wasn’t a standard backpack. It was a child carrier of the type you buy at camping shops. Usually, they are used with toddlers, but because Jack is slim hipped, and still unable to walk, we use it in situations where a pusher or wheelchair don’t work. With the noise of the concert, we guessed Jack would appreciate being close.

I explained Jack’s cerebral palsy. “Without this I reckon he hasn’t got a chance,” I said.

“Fair enough,” said the most sensible security officer on earth, then he ushered us in.

We found our way to the back of the stadium, using lifts and ramps that took us halfway around the venue. We found our spots. Plenty of room. Not too loud at all. The calm before the storm. Springsteen was still 40 minutes away.

“Will Bwuce play ‘American Land’?” Jack asked, which is Bruce’s thumping Pogues-ish ode to American immigration. Jack’s favourite.

“Maybe,” I said.

“Will he play ‘Badlands’?”

“Definitely.”

Then it started. The “MELBOOOURNE”, the clapping, the drums, the music. ‘American Land’ it was.

Jack shrieked as he does for the YouTube songs. He called Bruce’s name. He called Steven Van Zandt’s name. He jiggled, he rocked, he had a ball.

For 12 songs. One hour and 10 minutes.

Then he broke. ‘Youngstown’ broke him, and he asked to go home. We tried to stay on another couple of songs, hoping a favourite track might revive his exaltation, but it wasn’t to be. I messaged Ned, still patiently waiting for us outside the stadium. “Outside in 10?” Then we did a handover on Swan Street. Jack, with the noise behind him, was euphoric again. I returned to the show. Jack earbashed Ned all the way home about what he’d experienced. Then he told it all again to Tamsin.

His first words to me when he woke up the next day were: “I’m a Bwuce Springsteen fan. I’m a Bwuce Springsteen goer.”

Written by Tony Wilson.
